Silk Scarves
There are many different types of silk scarves that I use to create my pieces. I enjoy designing on different textures of silk, seeing how the dyes and resists react to each type. That is one of the best things about silk painting - you don't always know exactly how your piece
will look when it's finished. Outside factors such as weather can affect how a piece will look when it's completed. If it's humid, the piece can take longer to dry and sometimes "happy accidents" are the result.

The silks I use to create my designs are: Habotai or China Silk, Crepe De Chine, Chiffon, Jacquard, Jacquard and Chiffon, Devore Satin, Velvet Cut (with and without fringe), and Charmeuse.
The sizes range from: 9" x 54", 12" x 60", 15" x 60", 14" x 72",
22" x 72", 30" x 30", 35" x 35", and even 44" x 44". All of the
silks I use must be washed before painting on them and they start
out white. I mix my own chemical water, use Procion® Liquid H
Series Concentrate dyes, mix all my own colors, and draw my own designs using either a water-based resist or silk markers. When
that is dry I then paint my piece. Of course the process doesn't end there. After the piece is dry it must be carefully wrapped in a sheet and steamed for 30 to 45 minutes. When the steaming process is complete, hand-washing the piece in a small amount of snythrapol
and water will help finish the process, then hang the scarf to dry
and use a steam iron to completely remove the wrinkles. The scarves vary in price starting at $18 and up, depending on the type, size, design and style of the finished piece.
